Paul Townend Rides in Big Races
Paul Townend is the principal rider for trainer Willie Mullins. He is therefore definitely worth following throughout the course of a season. Providing he’s not sidelined with an injury, you can be he will be on board lots of winners during a campaign. The trick is determining which horses he is going to ride to success.
We’re talking about someone who has claimed the Irish jump racing Champion Jockey title on seven occasions to date. His latest success was in the 2024/25 season, and he has broken all manner of records as a jockey. The rider has scored four wins in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, having landed 2019 and 2020 victories on board Al Boum Photo. He then repeated the double in 2023 and 2024 on board Galopin Des Champs.
Townend has also been triumphant in the Grand National. He landed the spoils on board I Am Maximus in 2024 after previously winning the Irish Grand National on the same runner. He has been the number one in the Mullins yard since 2019 when Ruby Walsh retired and therefore gets first preference over which Mullins-trained horse to ride.

Paul Townend Rides at the Cheltenham Festival
Paul Townend is approaching the 40-winner mark at the Cheltenham Festival. He has those four Cheltenham Gold Cup victories to his name and also scored twice on Energumene in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. State Man gave him his first Champion Hurdle win in 2024, and there have also been a brace of Supreme Novices’ Hurdle victories on board Kopek Des Bordes and Appreciate It. Willie Mullins’ dominance at the Cheltenham Festival has led to Townend being fairly prolific at the meeting. He was able to ride four winners at the 2025 Festival, and it’s always worth following him at the biggest races. His choice of horses means it can often be telling depending on what option he takes in an encounter.
Paul Townend Rides at the Grand National
I Am Maximus gave Paul Townend his first success in the Grand National, with that victory coming in 2024. He was on board the same horse a year later when the charge finished second behind stable-mate Nick Rockett. Five of the first seven home in that race were trained by Willie Mullins, and it therefore bodes well for the future. Townend will be on board the leading Mullins horse in Grand Nationals to come, giving him every chance of further success.

Paul Townend has been hugely successful at the Dublin Racing Festival. Following Ruby Walsh’s retirement, the jockey has ridden several of Willie Mullins’ leading contenders to success. This includes three Irish Gold Cups, all on board Galopin Des Champs between 2023-25. He also has four Arkle Novice Chases to his name along with four Irish Champion Hurdles. He was on board Hurricane Fly in 2011 and won a consecutive hat-trick on State Man more recently.

When both of your grandfathers and your father are racehorse trainers, it is pretty much inevitable that you are going to follow the same road paved before you. That was certainly the case for Paul Townend. Born on 15th September 1990 in Midleton, Co. Cork, Townend was surrounded by horses since he was born, and he hasn’t left their sides ever since.
As with most youngsters with aspirations of becoming a professional jockey, the pony racing circuit was the first port of call for a young Paul Townend, and he quickly made a name for himself as a talented rider with bags full of potential.
Townend would start off as a flat apprentice, and at the tender age of 16, he rode his first winner aboard The Chip Chopman at Limerick for Seamus O’Donnell. Four days later he recorded his second victory on the same horse at Sligo. It was a rip-roaring start to his career, and a sign of things to come, as he finished his first season with a brilliant tally of 35 winners.
By the time he had turned 18, Paul Townend had moved over to the National Hunt sphere, having joined up with the all-conquering trainer, Willie Mullins. He quickly moved up through the ranks of Willie Mullins’ stable jockeys, eventually becoming second choice behind the legendary Ruby Walsh.

Despite playing second fiddle to Walsh, Townend was still riding some of racing’s top jumpers and had tasted Grade 1 successes before he even reached his 19th birthday. In the 2010-11 season, Townend was named Irish champion jockey for the first time, mainly thanks to stepping in for Walsh, who suffered an injury during the season.
Fast forward to the year 2019, where Townend would provide Willie Mullins with his long-awaited first Cheltenham Gold Cup win. With Ruby Walsh deciding to ride Bellshill, Townend got the leg up on Al Boum Photo, and the pair caused a major shock with punters and horse racing betting sites alike by bounding up the hill to win by two-and-a-half lengths.
At the end of that season, Paul Townend finally stepped out of the shadows and into the limelight – with Walsh announcing his surprise retirement from riding. Now was Townend’s time to shine, and shine he definitely did.
Since then, the new number one jockey for Mullins has recorded 13 Cheltenham Festival wins, including a successful defence of Al Boum Photo’s Gold Cup crown in 2020. He has twice been leading rider at the festival and continues to ride at the top of his game in Britain and Ireland’s biggest races. At the age of 32, the sky really is still the limit for the Corkman.
